Energy Benchmarking

Energy benchmarking is the process of gathering and comparing your facilities’ energy performance to something similar. “Something similar” might be internal, like performance at the same time last year. Or it might be external, like performance compared to similar facilities elsewhere. Both internal and external comparisons are helpful when working with limited budget resources and benchmarking works best when it’s done consistently over time because you can’t manage what you’re not measuring. In a recent study, the EPA found that buildings that were benchmarked consistently reduced energy use by an average of 2.4 percent per year, for a total savings of 7 percent. And, buildings that started out as poor performers saved even more. Benchmarking the energy performance of facilities is critical to establishing baselines that will help identify and prioritize improvement opportunities.

Why Benchmark Your Facility?

  • Compare energy performance metrics (e.g., kBtu/sf-yr) against other local buildings
  • Score energy performance from 1-100 using the U.S. EPA’s Portfolio Manager tool
  • Identify your least efficient buildings along with best performers
  • Benchmark over multiple years to show progress
  • Assess opportunity for additional energy cost savings
  • Target capital investment dollars
  • Earn recognition for previous energy efficiency efforts
